Art historian and curator Aki Ashida examines the work of Linder Sterling, featured in KYOTOGRAPHIE 2026, through the lens ofof modern and contemporary Western art history. Influenced by Dadaism and Surrealism, Linder has consistently challenged representations of the female body and desire. This talk traces her artistic practice through key works, highlighting its innovation and contemporary relevance.

  • Aki ASHIDA (Art Historian, Curator)

    Aki Ashida holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Humanities, Kobe University. She specializes in Modern and Contemporary Western Art History as well as Contemporary Art. She served as a curator at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto (2006–2019) and was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (2022–2024). Her curatorial projects include solo exhibitions for Nobuyoshi Araki, Motohiko Odani, and Tomoko Hayashi, as well as international group exhibitions such as “STANCE or DISTANCE?” and “Art Project KOBE 2019: TRANS-”. Her major publications include Reading and Understanding Masterpieces (Tokyo: Natsumesha, 2010) and the research paper “Issues of Painting and Spatiality in the Rothko Chapel” in Bishutsu-shi Rekisan (2013). Currently, while conducting research on post-war art history at Konan Women’s University and Kobe University, she remains active in curating contemporary art projects and writing art criticism.
