French photographer Juliette Agnel captures “ancient memories” and “mysterious nature.” This is a special, one-day-only tea ceremony where Toru Ota of the Yuuhisai Koudoukan interprets her serene yet powerful worldview through the spirit of the tea ceremony.

Within the room specially arranged for this exhibition, the eternal time emanating from the works resonates with the traditional space. A cup of Usucha (thin tea) served by the host during the tea serving and special Japanese sweets newly crafted from inspiration drawn from the works in this exhibition.

A moment filled with luxurious and intellectual delight. You will use the five senses and engage in dialogue with the artworks.
Please enjoy the profound afterglow unique to the venue where contemporary art and the spirit of the tea ceremony intersect.

Speakers Speakers

  • Toru Ota (Professor at Ritsumeikan University College of Gastronomy Management / Yuuhisai Koudoukan Representative Director / Head of Yusokugashi Gochoshinsho Oimatsu)

As a professor at Ritsumeikan University's College of Gastronomy Management, he conducts research on food culture while serving as the head of Kyoto's long-established confectionery shop, “Yusokugashi Gochoshinsho Oimatsu.” Holding a Doctor of Engineering degree, he explores traditional confectionery making and rituals from academic and scientific perspectives. As the representative director who preserved and revitalized the Edo-period academy site “Yuuhisai Koudoukan,” he operates a venue where visitors can experience Kyoto's traditional culture—including tea ceremony, Japanese sweets, and classical performing arts—through all five senses. By reinterpreting tradition from a contemporary perspective and connecting it with art and academia, he continues to disseminate new approaches to culture both domestically and internationally.
