This special talk event is inspired by Uruguayan photographer Federico Estol’s exhibition presented at KYOTOGRAPHIE 2026.

Over many years, Estol has documented the lives of shoe shiners in La Paz, Bolivia, using photography to shed light on individuals who are often overlooked and rendered invisible within society. Straddling the boundary between documentary and artistic expression, his work has received international recognition for its thoughtful and critical engagement with social issues.

This event will explore the theme of “Social Issues and Expression,” featuring Tomoyuki Hirose of RICEMEDIA Japan who uses video media to address social issues from a comical yet incisive perspective, and guest speaker Kouki Tange (Professor at Kyoto University of the Arts). How can photography and video engage with society and convey awareness of social issues to people from diverse backgrounds? By bridging the practices of art and media, their discussion will explore the possibilities of expression in contemporary society.

Speakers Speakers

  • Tomoyuki Hirose (Tomoshi Bito Inc. CEO)

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1995. During his student years, he pursued photojournalism and engaged in field reporting. Recognizing the growing challenge of meaningful social messages failing to reach audiences in today's information-saturated world, he founded Tomoshi Bito Inc. He operates RICE Media, a video media brand that makes social issues accessible and engaging through the power of creative concepts and compelling copy. Over three years, the channel has accumulated 320 million views and has been featured in YouTube's official YouTube Impact Report as a creator spreading awareness of current events and news. Social media following stands at approximately 540,000 (as of January 2026). Selected for BEYOND MILLENNIALS 2024, an award recognizing Gen Z and Millennial leaders tackling social challenges. Grand Prize winner of the 7th Nikkei Social Business Contest.

  • Kouki Tange (Professor at Kyoto University of the Arts / Filmmaker / Grape Grower))

Kouki Tange began his career in the field of music video, while also working in graphic art direction. In the aftermath of the nuclear disaster, however, he came to question the ethical foundations of advertising and its complicity within larger structures of violence and desire.

Since then, his practice has been oriented toward a more elemental inquiry: how to inhabit the world as a human being in right relation. Against discrimination, environmental devastation, violence, and war, he seeks a mode of existence grounded in balance, dignity, and care.
