In this masterclass, participants will explore how to visually articulate affirmation, doubt, accusation, and revelation directed toward the self, forms of expression that extend beyond what is typically described as shishashin (the “I-photograph”). Designed for photographers already documenting the margins of their own lives, the class invites them to consider and experiment with how narratives shaped through subjective experience can be translated and communicated to others through editing, sequencing and verbalising.

Atsushi Fukushima
After graduating from the Department of Photography at Osaka University of Arts, he worked as a delivery driver for a meal service catering exclusively to elderly people. For ten years, he delivered lunchboxes to seniors living alone while photographing their lives. His 2019 project I Deliver Meals to the Elderly Who Live Alone won the Grand Prize at the KG+SELECT Award. In 2020, the work was presented as part of the KYOTOGRAPHIE main program, followed by a photobook publication with Seigensha in 2021.
Since 2018, he has also worked in agriculture, photographing the intense summer harvest season while exploring the relationship between people and nature. His presentation at KYOTOGRAPHIE marks his first large-scale exhibition of this body of work. In 2022, he walked the length of Japan from Okinawa to Hokkaido, photographing the people he encountered along the way in a project centered on communication, which is currently in development.
Guided by the belief that living is both powerful and beautiful, he continues to create work rooted in direct human experience.
