This workshop is a collaboration with the NPO 'EJAAD,' which supports an embroidery learning centre for women in Afghanistan.
Kids inspired by the work of Joana Choumali (KYOTOGRAPHIE 2023 exhibiting artist) will combine photography and embroidery to create a mixed-media artwork. After taking a photo in front of an iconic view of Kyoto, kids will compile it with a photograph of a foreign country. The result will be printed on canvas paper. The kids will use embroidery to imagine a bridge between the two images.

The children's artwork will be displayed at Umekoji Potel from 3rd May to the end of the festival (KYOTOGRAPHIE + Exhibition).
The children will be able to take their artwork home after the exhibition.
Lecturer: Pittore Felice (Embroidery Artist), Jennifer Henbest de Calvillo (Co-Founder of Ejaad and Art teacher at Osaka International School of Kwansei Gakuin)

  • Jennifer Henbest Calvillo

Jennifer Henbest Calvillo is an artist and international educator. She has taught in the USA, Zimbabwe, Vietnam, Myanmar and Tokyo. Currently, she teaches at the Osaka International School campus of Kwansei Gakuin. In her workshops and classes, she aims to inspire student agency and curiosity about the world.
She has co-founded the NPO CAT(Collaborative Art Team) with Atsumi Fujita from Sokyo Gallery. CAT respects children’s creative ideas and focuses on exhibitions made entirely by children’s work. The first exhibition, “Fantastic Art by Kids” was exhibited at Sokyo Annex, Kyoto from Jan 18 to June 7, 2023.
Calvillo is also interested in how youth can get involved in local and international service projects and how art can be used to help others as well as being a catalyst for understanding the challenges and opportunities people in the world face. She is also the co-founder of the NPO EJAAD. She and her students are raising awareness about embroidery art in Afghanistan and the particular challenges women and girls face to earn a living through craft and get an education.

  • Pittore Felice

A painter who is also an apprentice in studying the human way of living. Loves to put her hands at work.
Her experience as a street portrait artist was what started her career as a painter.
After having a child, she started to express on canvas the unspoken feelings that emerged from within her. Recently she has brought that creative energy to embroidery, which is like drawing a painting little by little on a cloth. She has been creating embroidery art pieces and accessories while holding embroidery class sessions as a time to “connect to oneself”. She also holds the monthly workshop “Playing with the Earth Club” with childminder Kei Kimura, where participants can physically feel their likes and dislikes through activities.
