During the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography festival 2026, a tea ceremony will be held in the tea room of Hachikuan, a traditional Machiya serving as the information center. The ceremony will express the exhibition's theme, "EDGE," through the use of tea ceremony utensils and original Japanese sweets. The host will be Fukutaro Nakayama (Ryosokuin Temple).
There are no restrictions on what to bring or wear. First-time tea ceremony attendees are welcome. Conversation in English is also possible.

Important Notice
*Contents: A light offering, usucha (thin tea), and a traditional sweet
*Fee (tax included): ¥6,000 for adults / ¥4,000 for students
*Reservation priority. 40minutes per session. (The planned guest number is 4 people for each session.)
*No KYOTO GRAPHIE passport or single venue ticket is required for this event, but a separate participation fee is necessary.
*Photography is permitted during the tea ceremony, but please be considerate of other attendees. Flash photography and tripods are not allowed.
*The tea room is very small, so chairs will not be used. Also, it is not barrier-free, so please only participate if you are able to walk and sit on the tatami mats.
*First-time tea ceremony attendees are welcome.
*We can assist you in Japanese and English.
*You do not need to bring anything in particular.
*There is no dress code. Casual attire is acceptable. However, to ensure a more relaxed atmosphere, skinny pants, jeans, and skirts above the knee are not recommended.
*A small amount of alcohol may be served. Please refrain from driving if you plan to consume alcohol.
*If you have paid in advance at the student rate, please bring your student ID.

  • Fukutaro Nakayama (Tea Master at Ryosokuin Zen Temple)

    The host, Fukutaro Nakayama
    Tea practitioner. He holds tea ceremonies and workshops in various locations and supervises the design of tea rooms. Currently, he also works as a tea master at Ryosokuin Zen temple. He continues to work to materialize a tea ceremony that is relevant to the modern age by deconstructing and recombining the wisdom and techniques of the tea ceremony.
