A collaboration project between Daidō Moriyama, an artist of KYOTOGRAPHIE 2025, and UPLINK Kyoto.

As a pre-talk for the film “The Past Is Always New, the Future Is Forever Nostalgic: Photographer Daido Moriyama,” this event focuses on the era when photographs were primarily presented through photobooks and magazines. How did Daido Moriyama capture fragments of the city and its people within the pages, creating his unique visual experience? Photographer and book designer Satoru Machiguchi, together with KYOTOGRAPHIE co-director Yusuke Nakanishi, will explore Moriyama’s methodology and the appeal of his work.

How did Daidō Moriyama capture the fragmented essence of cities and people within the pages of his work, creating a unique visual experience? Involved in the reissue project of Moriyama’s debut book Nippon Gekijō Shashin-chō, book designer Satoru Machiguchi, who brings a perspective rooted in bookmaking, and Yusuke Nakanishi, KYOTOGRAPHIE co- founder & co-director, explore Moriyama’s methodology and the appeal of his work.

  • Satoshi Machiguchi (Book Designer, Graphic Designer, Publisher)

    Born in Tokyo, 1971. Founder of design studio, Match and Company. His wide range of work includes editing and book design for photobooks by leading Japanese photographers, editorial design for magazines, and graphic design for films, plays, and exhibitions. In 2005, to take on the challenge of publishing and distributing his own photobooks, he launched the photobook label "M" and at the same time established the photobook sales company "bookshop M". Since 2008, he has been participating at PARIS PHOTO, one of the world's largest photography fairs, pursuing the potential of Japanese photobooks from a global perspective, while at the same time committed to sharing Japan's excellent paper, printing, and bookbinding techniques with the world.

    Lighting Director. Yusuke Nakanishi was born in 1968 in Fukuoka, and currently lives in Kyoto. He travels the world, expressing his impressions of light and shadow from his memories. He has worked as a lighting director for music videos, feature films, stages, music concerts, fashion shows and interior designs. He also created lighting object series eatable lights and Tamashii and has exhibited installations at the Hara Museum, School Gallery (Paris), including Nuit Blanche in Kyoto. He co-founded KYOTOGRAPHIE with Lucille Reyboz in 2013 and is the co-director. In Autumn 2022, he was involved in the creative direction for Van Cleef & Arpels exhibition LIGHT OF FLOWERS, which was held on the grounds of Shimogamo Shrine and the Tadasunomori Forest. In 2023, he co-founded KYOTOPHONIE Borderless Music Festival with Lucille Reyboz.
