This year’s KG+ AWARD Finalists and Grand Prix winner were announced at the April 24 KG+ opening party. After careful deliberation, the Selection Committee settled upon three Finalists —Everywhere We Shoot, Hayato Nishimura and Yan Kallen—and ultimately decided to present the KG+ AWARD 2016 Grand Prix to Hong Kong-based artist Yan Kallen.

Appraisals
Yan Kallen
Yan Kallen’s exactingly photographed works recall the precise specimen images of early 20th century botanist Karl Blossfeldt, bringing out the forms of his subjects with true artisanal skill, while exploring relationships between humans and nature. The refined beauty suffused by works themselves combines with the timeless heritage quality of the pictured objects to incite viewers to reconsider how humans once coexisted with nature, thus calling into question the values of contemporary society.
Likewise, the infusion of Mainland Asian culture into the sukiya-architecture gallery achieves a heightened harmony between the tranquil space and delicate simplicity of the works.
His additional sculptural piece[s] and dummy book further serve to diversify the photographic medium, and raise expectations of developments yet to come. >Artist page

Everywhere We Shoot
Artist duo Everywhere We Shoot looks at American-dominated consumer society in their native Philippines, their own unique filter presaging yet other possibilities. Intentionally or not, their hybrid works bring together an almost excessive mélange of influences from 20th to 21st century photographers, while the installation adds even greater interest to the photographs themselves. >Artist page

Hayato Nishimura
Bringing a keen gaze to bear upon the tangled computer cables and bricolaged experimental equipment of high-tech workplaces, Nishimura’s unique images ironically highlight the primitive fragility of infrastructure and techologies that inform contemporary society. >Artist page
